Amnesty International has urged governments to ensure the safety of the Global Sumud Flotilla, which is attempting to reach the Gaza Strip.
In a statement posted on X, the human rights organisation said the inaction of states in response to the situation in Gaza had compelled activists worldwide to launch a peaceful initiative aimed at breaking the blockade.
“States have a responsibility to guarantee the flotilla’s safe passage,” Amnesty wrote. “They must step up pressure to protect the flotilla and demand an end to Israel’s unlawful blockade, as well as the ongoing hostilities in Gaza.”
The Global Sumud Flotilla, carrying international activists, set sail earlier this week with the stated objective of challenging Israel’s restrictions on Gaza. Organisers say the mission is a non-violent effort to deliver a political message and humanitarian solidarity.
Israel has previously intercepted similar flotillas, citing security concerns and enforcement of its blockade, which it says is aimed at preventing weapons from reaching Hamas. Human rights groups, however, argue that the blockade has caused severe humanitarian consequences for Gaza’s civilian population.
