Pakistan reached a major milestone in cricket history on Saturday when they played their 1,000th One-Day International with the opening match of the three-game home series against Australia at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium.

The national side made its ODI debut against New Zealand in Christchurch in 1973. Since then, Pakistan have featured in 999 matches before Saturday's landmark encounter, registering 527 victories and 442 defeats. Nine matches ended in ties, while 21 produced no result.

Over the years, Pakistan have enjoyed several memorable achievements in the 50-over format. Among the most significant were winning the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup in 1992 and lifting the ICC Men's Champions Trophy in 2017. The Champions Trophy triumph was sealed with a dominant 180-run victory over arch-rivals India in the final.

With their latest appearance, Pakistan became only the third team in ODI history to complete 1,000 matches, joining Australia and India in the exclusive club.

India currently hold the record for the most ODI appearances with 1,075 matches, while Australia are second on the list with 1,019 games.

Ahead of the historic fixture, Australia captain Josh Inglis presented Pakistan skipper Shaheen Shah Afridi with a special commemorative souvenir at the toss. The gift featured a bat topped with a bail and three miniature bails, symbolising Pakistan's 1,000th ODI appearance.
