A Florida man, Ronald "Blue" Dalton, has sued Netflix for $50 million due to streaming issues during the Mike Tyson vs. Jake Paul fight, which was marred by buffering and glitches, leaving viewers frustrated and unable to watch key moments.
Despite the technical difficulties, the event was a huge success, with Netflix reporting a record-breaking global audience of 108 million viewers, and the co-main event featuring Amanda Serrano vs. Katie Taylor becoming the most-watched women's sports event in history.
However, the lawsuit accuses Netflix of delivering an "unwatchable" spectacle, citing widespread streaming issues, including no access, streaming glitches, and buffering problems, which affected over 100,000 viewers.
The complaint alleges Netflix was "woefully ill-prepared" for the broadcast, and the company should have anticipated potential technical issues given previous problems with live events.
Netflix acknowledged the technical challenges but defended its response, describing the handling of the issues as "brilliant".
The lawsuit raises concerns about Netflix's readiness to handle live events of this scale, and critics question whether its infrastructure can meet the demands of massive viewership events.
The streaming giant faces pressure to improve its livestreaming capabilities, especially with competitors like Hulu successfully livestreaming major events with minimal issues.
