Indian cricketers seem unable to move on from Pakistan, even when the country is barely related to what they do, they somehow find a way to bring it up. However, this time, the attempt at jingoism backfired badly, as India’s women’s cricket team captain ended up trolling her own army while trying to mock Pakistan.

A video of Indian cricketer Harmanpreet Kaur went viral, showing her celebrating her World Cup victory by having trophy in one hand and a tea cup in the other.

She took a sip from the cup and then clinked it with the trophy, symbolically referencing tea, a gesture many Indian users online used to troll Pakistan.

But Pakistani social media users were quick to remind Indians of the actual history behind the “tea cup” reference, the 2019 incident when Indian pilot Abhinandan Varthaman was captured by the Pakistan Army after his jet crashed.

During his captivity, Abhinandan’s comment, “The tea is fantastic,” went viral, becoming a major meme and an embarrassment for India internationally.

Many Pakistanis pointed out the irony, saying Indians were unknowingly mocking their own soldier. “The person who said ‘tea was fantastic’ was Indian. I still can’t fathom how mocking his misery mocks Pakistan,” one user wrote.

A video of the captured Indian pilot, released by the government, showed him identifying himself as “Wing Commander Abhinandan Vathaman” and his service number “27981”. However, he refused to provide further information.

In another video, the detained Indian pilot expressed gratitude to the Pakistan Army captain and soldiers for rescuing him from a mob and appreciating their conduct.

During the interaction, a Pakistani major general inquired if he enjoyed the tea, to which Abhinandan famously replied, "The tea is fantastic." This remark garnered significant attention on news channels and social media.

Addressing a joint session in Parliament on February 28, former prime minister Imran Khan announced that Pakistan would be releasing the pilot as a gesture of peace.

Captured Indian pilot Abhinandan Varthaman was repatriated to India through the Wagah border.
