Lahore police have arrested a young man for his alleged involvement in a bank robbery and recovered Rs700,000 in stolen cash, a pistol and other items from his home.

According to the police, the suspect told them that he decided to rob the bank after receiving a “bank robbery task” while playing PUBG.

The robbery took place at around 9:30am near Bhatta Chowk in Defence. The police said that the suspect, wearing a mask, entered the bank and held the security guard hostage before taking cash from the counter.

The entire robbery was conducted within a few minutes, after which the suspect returned to his home, a police officer said, adding that the police were able to locate him by using footage from Safe City and private surveillance cameras.

The officer said that the police reached his house, which was only a short distance from the bank. He added that the suspect was identified as Subhan, who had returned to Pakistan from the UK on September 16 and had been living alone in Lahore, while his family remained in the UK.

During questioning, the police said that Subhan explained that he had been playing PUBG for several years and had obtained a mask and pistol before carrying out the robbery. He also allegedly described to investigators methods shown in the game for robbing a bank.

The DIG said that the suspect was planning to travel to Islamabad with the stolen money when police raided his residence. The police recovered the Rs700,000, along with the weapon and a briefcase.

They also found that he had changed his vehicle’s number plates in an attempt to avoid being traced.
