Police have collected DNA samples of Bibi Gul Jan, the mother of Bano Bibi who was killed along with a man in the name of 'honour' in the Dagari area of Quetta district nearly two months ago.

Gul Jan, who is currently in custody, was arrested after a video surfaced in which she justified the killing as a “punishment” in accordance with Baloch customs and traditions. In the video, she endorsed the double murder that sparked widespread outrage and condemnation.

According to a police statement, the DNA samples were collected at the request of the Serious Crime Investigation Wing that is probing the case. Police surgeon Dr Ayesha Faiz confirmed that the suspect's samples of hair, blood and saliva were taken before being sealed and handed over to the police.

They will now be sent to the Punjab Forensic Science Agency to ascertain the biological relationship between Gul Jan and the victim.

Dr Faiz said that DNA samples of victim Bano Bibi were collected during her post-mortem examination.

A video of the double murder, captured in broad daylight, surfaced online days later and sparked outrage on social media over the continued use of so-called ‘honour’ as justification of violence against women.

In the video statement, the mother of victim Bano said, “Whatever we did, we did in the name of honour. We have not committed any sin.”
