KARACHI: The Consumer Association of Pakistan has warned of a boycott campaign in Karachi if the price of milk is increased to Rs300 per litre, urging authorities to review the costs incurred by dairy farmers before approving any price hike.
Consumer Association Chairman Kaukab Iqbal said the government should assess farmers’ actual production costs before determining a new milk price.
He said milk consumption in Karachi was estimated at around 7 million litres per day, while production was approximately 3 million litres. He called for official verification of the figures relating to milk production and consumption.
Kaukab Iqbal also urged authorities to introduce effective laboratory testing to monitor the supply and quality of milk and prevent adulteration.
He called on the Commissioner Karachi to take immediate notice of the possibility of a milk price increase and urged authorities to consult farmers, retailers and consumers before fixing the price.
“Providing consumers with quality milk at a reasonable price is the government’s responsibility,” he said.
