WhatsApp is testing a new privacy feature that allows users to communicate using unique usernames instead of sharing their phone numbers, according to WABetaInfo, a platform that tracks WhatsApp developments.

The Meta-owned messaging service, with over two billion global users, is reportedly piloting the feature on beta versions for Android and iOS. It enables select users to create personalized handles that can be used to start chats or find contacts, without exposing their personal numbers.

Described by analysts as one of WhatsApp’s most significant privacy updates, the feature is part of Meta’s broader push to strengthen user protection and reduce reliance on phone numbers as the main form of identification across its platforms.

WABetaInfo reported that WhatsApp is currently testing systems to verify username availability and prevent duplicates. The feature may be rolled out more widely in the coming weeks.

Reports from Interesting Engineering and Euro Weekly News suggest that the new system will allow users to display only their usernames in chats and group conversations, keeping phone numbers hidden from unknown contacts.

Although registration will still require a valid phone number, the addition of usernames is viewed as a key step toward a safer and more privacy-focused digital identity.
