Travellers heading to the United Kingdom (UK) will now receive digital visa confirmation by email instead of the traditional passport sticker, following the launch of a new eVisa system announced by the British High Commission in Islamabad.

Under the updated process, visitors — including tourists — will continue to submit applications online and visit a visa application centre to provide biometric data. However, successful applicants will now receive a digital immigration status record through their UK Visas and Immigration account, eliminating the need to return to the visa centre to collect their passports.

The change will allow applicants to keep their passports after the biometrics appointment while managing their visa status online, said the British HC in Islamabad.

British High Commissioner Jane Marriott described the move as a major facilitation step for Pakistani travellers. “This is a hugely exciting step for Pakistanis visiting the UK for tourism, visiting loved ones, or business meetings, that removes a big step from the application process,” she said.

“As well as being able to save time by holding on to your passport, the new share code system makes it easier than ever to demonstrate your visa status.”

According to the High Commission, the eVisa system offers a more secure way to manage immigration status and reduces the risk of lost or damaged documents. Applicants will be able to generate a share code to prove their visa status at border checks and other official points.

Authorities emphasised that there is no change to visa processing times, eligibility requirements, or visa conditions under the new system.

Applicants have also been strongly advised to avoid third-party visa agents and instead apply directly through the official UK government website, which officials described as the only reliable source of information.

The High Commission noted that eVisas were rolled out successfully last year for students and work visa holders, with thousands of travellers already using the digital system at UK airports. Existing passport sticker visas will remain valid and are not affected by the latest changes.
