Skywatchers across Pakistan are set to witness a rare astronomical event tonight as a “Blue Moon” becomes visible in the night sky.

According to astronomers, a second full moon is occurring in May 2026, a phenomenon known as a Blue Moon. This relatively uncommon event typically takes place once every two to three years.

In Lahore, the Blue Moon will be visible after moonrise this evening. Astronomical data indicates that the moon will rise at approximately 7:22 pm and remain visible throughout the night.

Experts say the best viewing window will be between 7:30 pm and 10:00 pm, when the moon appears closest to the eastern horizon and offers the most striking view, weather conditions permitting.

Chairman of the Department of Space Science at Punjab University, Professor Dr Syed Aamer Mahmood, explained that a Blue Moon does not refer to the colour of the moon but is an astronomical term.

It is used when two full moons occur within the same calendar month, with the second full moon being called a Blue Moon. In May 2026, the first full moon occurred on 1 May, while the second is taking place on 31 May.

He further noted that this event is also classified as a micro moon, meaning the moon is positioned relatively farther from Earth in its orbit. As a result, it may appear slightly smaller and dimmer than a typical full moon.

Astronomical calculations show that the Blue Moon reached its peak phase at around 1:45 pm Pakistan time, although it was not visible from Lahore at that moment due to its position below the horizon. The best viewing opportunity for the public will therefore be later in the evening.

Experts recommend that citizens observe the phenomenon from open areas, parks, or rooftops of high-rise buildings facing east, where light pollution is minimal and the sky is clearer for viewing the celestial event.
