Prominent lawyer killed during funeral gathering in Karachi’s Defence area

Renowned lawyer Khawaja Shamsul Islam was shot dead during a firing incident outside a mosque in Defence Phase 6 on Thursday. The attack occurred shortly after he had attended the funeral prayers of prominent businessman Muzammil Paracha.

According to police sources, unidentified gunmen ambushed Shamsul Islam as he exited the mosque on Khayaban-e-Rahat.

He was critically injured after being struck by three bullets. His son and another individual also sustained injuries in the attack.

All three victims were rushed to a private hospital, where Shamsul Islam later succumbed to his wounds.

A police team arrived at the scene following the incident, and an investigation is currently underway. SSP South confirmed that efforts are being made to ascertain the motive and identify the perpetrators.

This was not the first time the senior lawyer had been targeted. He survived a previous attack last year, in which he sustained a gunshot wound to the shoulder.

Khawaja Shamsul Islam was a high-profile lawyer known for handling major civil and criminal cases, especially those related to land disputes. He had also been previously booked in a case involving a confrontation with police in the Defence area.
