The Sindh government has decided to limit the number of people coming to Karachi airport to pick or drop their relatives as part of enhanced security measures.
The decision was taken during a high-level meeting on security threats chaired by Sindh Home Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar. The meeting was attended by the home secretary, Inspector General of Sindh Police and other senior officials, who provided a detailed briefing on the prevailing security situation.
During the session, the home minister said that in view of past incidents and security concerns, firm steps are necessary. He directed authorities to formulate comprehensive standard operating procedures (SOPs) to ensure a swift response to any untoward incident.
Emphasising the need for stricter control at airports, he noted that overcrowding at pick-and-drop points created security vulnerabilities. Under the new directive, only one or two people will be allowed to accompany passengers at airport drop-off areas.
Lanjar also instructed police to strengthen coordination with all law enforcement agencies. He ordered that search application devices be made available in all prisons across Sindh and directed that female searchers be deployed at all provincial entry and exit points.
He further called for a security audit of all key and sensitive installations in the province, an indiscriminate crackdown against the display of weapons, and strict implementation of the National Action Plan in its true spirit.
