KP CM Sohail Afridi under fire for replacing Pakistan’s national flag with PTI flag

As Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi took charge after much chaos surrounding his election, another controversy erupted when he replaced Pakistan’s national flag with his political party’s flag.

A picture of Afridi sitting with two officials in his office went viral online. The photo showed no national flag behind him, while a portrait of former prime minister Imran Khan was prominently placed on the wall.

This sparked criticism, with many questioning why the national emblem had been removed from its official place.

Although a small Pakistani flag could be seen on his table, critics still raised concerns, asking why he felt the need to replace the main flag with his party’s flag instead.

“In the office of the Chief Minister of the country’s most important province, it (the flaf) was removed from its designated location and placed on a desk in a corner like a superfluous object,” journalist Iqrar ul Hassan remarked.

Social media users also shared a comparison with former KP Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur’s office, where a large national flag stood behind his chair, a symbol now visibly missing in Afridi’s setup.

Sohail Afridi was heavily criticised by federal ministers and political rivals for his opposition to a military operation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Many have accused him of encouraging militant elements under the influence of his party leader, Imran Khan.

Defiant in his stance, Afridi has publicly opposed the military operation and urged the government not to deport Afghan refugees, calling instead for an amicable dialogue to resolve the issue.
