Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and US President Donald Trump shared a noticeable exchange during the Gaza peace summit in Egypt. Trump had invited PM Shehbaz to speak at the event, and the American leader appeared genuinely impressed by the Pakistani premier’s speech, offering profuse admiration and praise.

As leaders from 35 countries gathered in Sharm El Sheikh to sign a peace deal aimed at securing a ceasefire in Gaza, PM Shehbaz actively engaged with several heads of state. Among those interactions, his brief yet cordial encounter with President Trump stood out.

When the two first met at the summit, they shared a short conversation, smiling, shaking hands, and exchanging pleasantries. Their interaction again drew notice during the signing ceremony, where all leaders assembled behind President Trump as he stood at the podium.

Prime Minister Shehbaz was positioned prominently in the center, between Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

During his address after the signing ceremony, Trump said, “I want to thank Shehbaz Sharif of Pakistan and my favorite field marshal from Pakistan who is not here (in Egypt, to sign the Gaza Peace Deal). Give him my regards.”

The statement immediately set the internet abuzz, as Trump’s reference to Pakistan’s Army Chief, General Asim Munir, whom he called his “favorite,” drew widespread attention.

When PM Shehbaz took the podium, he in turn highlighted Trump’s role in bringing an end to the ongoing assault in Gaza. He also acknowledged Trump’s earlier efforts in helping de-escalate tensions between Pakistan and India.

“Mr President, I would like to salute you for your exemplary leadership, visionary leadership, and I think that you're the man this world needed most at this point in time,” Shehbaz said in his address.

He went on to add, “Pakistan had nominated President Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize for his outstanding and extraordinary contributions, first to stop the war between India and Pakistan, and now to achieve a ceasefire along with his wonderful team.”

PM Shehbaz once again nominated Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, praising his contribution to peace in South Asia and his efforts to “save millions of lives” through the Gaza peace deal.

Following the speech, Trump appeared visibly flattered by the remarks. Responding with a smile, he said, “Wow, I didn’t expect that. Let’s go home. There’s nothing more I have to say. Goodbye everybody. That was really beautiful. And beautifully delivered. Wow. Thank you very much.”

When Trump suggested that India and Pakistan could live peacefully, he turned to Prime Minister Shehbaz for his agreement. They both shared a laugh, after which PM Shehbaz said, "7 planes," and Trump smiled.

While many described the exchange as a diplomatic success that strengthened Pakistan’s image on the global stage, others criticised the speech as overly flattering and out of step with the occasion.
