Former Speaker of the Sindh Assembly, Agha Siraj Durrani, passed away on Tuesday after battling illness following a brain hemorrhage he suffered last month.

Agha Siraj Durrani was a seasoned politician associated with the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) for decades and remained a close aide to the party’s leadership. Political leaders, including President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, paid rich tributes to his long political career and public service.

“President Asif Ali Zardari has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of former Speaker of the Sindh Assembly, Agha Siraj Durrani. The President paid tribute to his political and public services, acknowledging his role in strengthening democracy and serving the people of Sindh,” read a statement from the Presidential Office on X.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also expressed grief and offered prayers for the departed soul, wishing patience for his bereaved family. He noted that Durrani’s contributions to democracy and public service “will never be forgotten.”

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah described Durrani as a steadfast and principled leader who remained loyal to his party throughout his political journey.

Agha Siraj Durrani served as Speaker of the Provincial Assembly for two consecutive terms, from 2013 to 2024, and also took charge as Acting Governor of Sindh in 2022. He was first elected to the Sindh Assembly in 1988 and served as a minister in the provincial government three times during his political career.
