IHC calls 102-hour weekly duty for doctors ‘inhumane’

The court directed the PMDC to decide the representation and place its recommendations before the federal and provincial governments for appropriate action.

Islamabad High Court Justice Raja Inam Amin Minhas has termed requiring doctors to work up to 102 hours a week as “inhumane”.

In its response submitted to the court, the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP) highlighted the impact of prolonged duty hours on doctors’ alertness and performance.

The organisation highlighted potential effects of extended working periods on doctors’ alertness and performance.

The response submitted before IHC drew attention to concerns about whether excessive working hours could affect medical duties.

The court referred the matter to the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC), directing it to review the issue and submit its recommendations to the government.

During the hearing, Justice Raja Inam Amin Minhas remarked that making doctors work up to 102 hours a week was inhumane and said the relevant regulatory and government institutions should consider the matter.
