Zohran Mamdani formally assumed charge as mayor of New York City just after midnight, marking the start of his term with an unusual ceremony at a disused subway station in Manhattan.
The Democratic leader chose the old City Hall station for his first oath-taking, where he placed his hand on the Holy Quran. The oath was administered by New York Attorney General Letitia James, who has worked closely with Mamdani on political issues.
A second, larger swearing-in ceremony is planned later in the day at City Hall at 1pm. US Senator Bernie Sanders, widely regarded as one of Mamdani’s political influences, is expected to administer the oath during the public event.
Mamdani’s rise to office is historic for several reasons. He is the first Muslim to serve as mayor of the United States’ largest city, as well as the first mayor of South Asian heritage and the first to be born in Africa.
At just 34 years of age, he is also the youngest New York City mayor in decades, stepping into one of the most demanding roles in American politics.
