President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address turned confrontational on Tuesday night as sharp exchanges broke out between him and several Democratic lawmakers, particularly over immigration and alleged fraud investigations.
As Trump defended his administration’s immigration policies and referred to a fraud probe linked to Minnesota’s Somali community, members of the Democratic caucus openly pushed back from the chamber floor. The interruptions quickly escalated into shouting.
During his remarks, Trump said Democrats should be “ashamed” over their stance. That prompted an immediate response from Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, who fired back: “You should be ashamed!”
Rep. Rashida Tlaib of Michigan also shouted “Liar!” as the president continued speaking.
The atmosphere in the chamber grew increasingly tense. Omar and Tlaib continued to interrupt the speech, their objections becoming louder as the address progressed. Rep. Sarah McBride of Delaware was also seen shouting toward the podium.
At one point, Omar and Tlaib yelled, “You have killed Americans!" before eventually walking out of the House chamber in protest.
Meanwhile, Rep. Norma Torres of California staged her own silent demonstration, holding up a placard displaying photographs of Renee Nicole Good and Alex Pretti — two American citizens who were killed in Minneapolis in January during immigration enforcement operations.
