A hot-mic exchange between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin was broadcast by China’s state-run broadcaster CCTV ahead of a military parade in Beijing on Tuesday.

In the recording, the two leaders were heard discussing advances in biotechnology and human organ transplants as they walked toward Tiananmen Square for the celebrations. Putin’s translator was captured saying in Chinese, “Biotechnology is continuously developing.”

Following an inaudible remark by Putin, the translator continued, “Human organs can be continuously transplanted. The longer you live, the younger you become, and you can even achieve immortality.”

The unusual exchange was aired before the start of the military parade, which marked the anniversary of the end of World War II in Asia. Neither leader has publicly commented on the conversation since the broadcast.
