Tensions between Iran and the United States have escalated after Tehran announced it would not participate in planned talks in Islamabad, citing Washington’s recent actions.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said the government has “no plans” to attend a new round of negotiations following the US seizure of an Iranian-flagged cargo vessel in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. The move has further strained already fragile relations between the two sides.

The development came hours after US President Donald Trump announced that a delegation would travel to Pakistan to explore the possibility of renewed dialogue with Tehran. However, uncertainty surrounds the composition and timing of the US team, with reports suggesting officials including Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner could arrive ahead of Vice President JD Vance, should talks proceed.

Iranian officials have accused Washington of violating a ceasefire and said past military actions during negotiations have eroded trust. Baghaei emphasised that Tehran cannot overlook previous attacks while diplomatic efforts were ongoing.

Meanwhile, Pakistan has stepped up security in Islamabad ahead of the anticipated talks. Authorities have deployed thousands of additional police and paramilitary personnel, while key routes in the capital have been closed as a precautionary measure.

Separately, violence continues in the occupied West Bank, where Palestinian casualties have risen sharply since the start of Israel’s war on Gaza in October 2023. According to recent figures, more than 1,100 Palestinians have been killed and thousands injured, with mass arrests also reported.
