The United States and Iran are reportedly close to reaching an agreement that would extend a ceasefire for 60 days and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, according to a report published by Axios on Saturday, citing a US official.

Under the proposed arrangement, negotiations would continue on Iran’s nuclear programme during the ceasefire period. The report said the Strait of Hormuz would remain open without tolls, while Iran would remove mines it had deployed in the strategic waterway to allow commercial shipping to move freely.

In return, the United States would reportedly lift its blockade on Iranian ports and provide limited sanctions waivers enabling Iran to resume oil exports.

According to the report, the draft agreement also includes Iranian commitments not to pursue nuclear weapons and to negotiate on suspending uranium enrichment and addressing its stockpile of highly enriched uranium.

Axios reported that Iran had provided verbal assurances through mediators regarding the scope of concessions it may be willing to make concerning enrichment activities and nuclear material.

The report further stated that Washington would negotiate on additional sanctions relief and the possible unfreezing of Iranian funds during the 60-day period.

Neither the US nor Iranian governments immediately issued official statements confirming the reported agreement.
