British police have warned that individuals chanting the slogan “Global Intifada” in support of Palestine at public gatherings will be arrested.
According to foreign media reports, UK police said that perceptions have changed following the Bondi Beach attack in Australia, and chanting slogans such as “Global Intifada” in pro-Palestinian demonstrations could now lead to arrests.
In a joint statement, the Metropolitan Police and Greater Manchester Police said they are aware of public concerns regarding placards and chants referring to “globalised intifada” and stressed the need for stricter enforcement.
The statement said violent incidents have already occurred and the context has changed, adding that words carry meaning and consequences. The police said they would take decisive action and make arrests where necessary.
The report noted that some campaigners criticised the announcement by the London and Manchester police forces, describing it as politically motivated.
Meanwhile, extremist Jewish groups welcomed the police warning. The UK’s Chief Rabbi, Ephraim Mirvis, described the move as an important step against hate.
On the other hand, Ben Jamal, head of a pro-Palestinian advocacy campaign, said the decision violated the right to protest. He stated that the joint police statement was another crude attempt to politically suppress demonstrations in support of Palestinian rights.
