Saudi Arabia’s General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) said on Wednesday that three people were killed and 36 others wounded after separate attacks targeted airports in Riyadh and Abha.

The attacks targeted Abha International Airport and King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh on Tuesday and Wednesday, according to GACA. Emergency protocols were activated at both airports following the incidents.

Two women, both residents of Saudi Arabia — one Moroccan and the other Algerian — were killed in the attack on Abha airport. Another 28 Saudi citizens and residents sustained injuries.

The injured at Abha included Saudi nationals as well as residents from Bangladesh and the Philippines, GACA said. At King Khalid International Airport, a Sudanese resident was killed and eight people were wounded.

Among those injured in the Riyadh attack were five Saudi citizens, two Egyptian residents and a Pakistani national. Their injuries varied in severity. All 36 injured people were taken to hospitals for treatment, according to the aviation authority.

The attacks also caused damage to property, although GACA did not provide details about the extent of the damage.

The authority said it was coordinating with security agencies to assess the damage and take steps to protect passengers and airport staff and maintain the safety of the country’s civil aviation network.
