US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Monday said that the International Criminal Court (ICC) is jeopardizing America’s sovereignty and “is waging a war” against the nation.

"The ICC and its allies are waging a war against our nation, not through bullets and missiles, but through laws, compacts, and the power of 'international law.'"

He continued by saying that the court “has become the unaccountable enforcer of a new world order of law where they can prosecute and arrest our people at whim.”

According to Rubio, the court “has proven to be far more radical and extremist” than what it was ever thought to be; and “has been filled with unelected globalists who wield near-absolute power.”

Rubio made these comments following the Trump administration’s efforts to undo what it thinks is the threat posed to American sovereignty by the ICC, according to a State Department official.

President Donald Trump and other US officials, including former President George W. Bush, have for years claimed that ICC should not have the jurisdiction to investigate and try Americans, especially the members of the military forces.

Reuters earlier this year found the Trump administration backed sanctions against ICC officials in part to head off any future attempts to hold him or his officials accountable for US military action overseas.
