ANKARA: Pakistan, Turkiye, Qatar and Indonesia signed a defence cooperation agreement on Wednesday to strengthen military capabilities and expand collaboration in defence production, training and research, Turkey’s Defence Ministry said.

The agreement, known as the “Badr Memorandum of Understanding”, was signed in Doha, Qatar, according to a statement issued by the Turkish Defence Ministry.

The ministry said the accord aimed to deepen cooperation among the four countries and strengthen partnerships in the defence sector.

It added that the agreement would promote collaboration in military production, technical training, research and development, while enhancing the defence industrial capacities of the participating countries.

The initiative would also seek to utilise the countries’ respective military production capabilities to improve cooperation and help meet the defence requirements of allied and friendly nations, the ministry said.

Turkiye has been supporting defence capabilities in Gulf countries, including Qatar, where it maintains a military base.

In August, Ankara signed a mutual defence pact with Pakistan and Saudi Arabia under which an attack on one party constitutes an attack on all, according to the report.

Turkiye also maintains close ties with Indonesia, particularly in the defence industry.

The Turkish Defence Ministry said the Badr accord would further strengthen ties between the participating countries’ defence industries and promote cooperation on shared security objectives.
