Israeli police said on Thursday that they have detained a man for allegedly threatening to assassinate Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

According to the police, a man in his forties from the southern city of Kiryat Gat entered a local station shortly before the start of the Jewish New Year holiday on Monday evening and declared his intention to kill the prime minister.

“The suspect told officers that he planned to acquire a firearm and shoot the Prime Minister three times,” police said in a statement.

He was taken into custody, and prosecutors are expected to file an indictment against him later on Thursday. Police said they would seek to keep him in detention until the conclusion of the legal process.

The development comes as Netanyahu faces waning public support over Israel’s nearly two-year conflict in Gaza with Hamas. The war has raised concerns about Israel’s growing international isolation.

Currently, 48 hostages remain in Gaza, with 20 believed to be alive. Their families continue to press the government to reach an agreement that would secure their release.
