Indian-origin driver rapes passenger after she falls unconscious in cab in US

A rideshare driver of Indian origin has been booked for raping a young woman after she passed out in his cab in California.

Police identified the suspect as 35-year-old Simranjit Singh Sekhon. The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office said that he was taken into custody after an investigation into the reported rape of a 21-year-old woman.

According to the police, the case surfaced in November 2025 when the Major Crimes Sexual Assault Unit received a complaint from Camarillo. Detectives said that Sekhon, who lives in Bakersfield, is also being investigated for the possibility of other victims who may not have come forward.

Police said that the woman was picked up from a bar in Thousand Oaks around 1:00 am on November 27 for a ride home. They stated that “the female was intoxicated and unable to care for herself.” During the journey, she reportedly fell asleep.

The officers said that although the trip was shown as completed, Sekhon continued driving around Camarillo and sexually assaulted the victim while she was unconscious.

Sekhon was arrested on December 15 and booked on charges of raping an unconscious and particularly vulnerable victim. He has pleaded not guilty. His bail was set at $500,000, and his next court appearance is scheduled for December 29.

The police did not disclose which rideshare service he was driving for or details about his immigration status.
