India’s state-owned aerospace company has announced that it has signed an agreement with US-based General Electric (GE) to procure more than 100 engines for its domestically developed Tejas fighter jets.
The deal, according to Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), involves GE Aerospace supplying 113 engines for the advanced Tejas Mk1A variant, with deliveries scheduled between 2027 and 2032. The company did not disclose the financial details of the contract in its statement on social media platform X.
This agreement follows India’s recent $7 billion order with HAL for 97 Tejas Mk1A light combat aircraft, announced just over a month ago.
The engine supply deal comes amid a period of tension in US-India relations, triggered by President Donald Trump’s decision to impose tariffs on India in response to its purchases of Russian oil.
While the two countries have yet to finalize a trade agreement, leaders including Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have signaled a more conciliatory approach following a downturn in bilateral ties in August.
