US President Donald Trump has brokered a landmark peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia, prompting the leaders of both countries to call for him to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

The deal is regarded as historic, as it ends four decades of conflict over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region.

Although Armenians have populated the area since the Soviet era, the territory falls within the territory of Azerbaijan. Both nations have long vied for control of the region until Azerbaijan took full control in 2023. Baku has since sought to normalise relations with Yerevan.

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan met President Trump at the White House, where a comprehensive ceasefire agreement was signed, with Trump acting as a witness.

The agreement paves the way for cooperation in trade, tourism, and diplomacy, with both nations pledging to respect each other’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. As part of the deal, the United States will lift sanctions on military cooperation with Azerbaijan.

In addition, Armenia and Azerbaijan signed agreements with each other and with the United States to open transportation routes and establish a transit corridor named the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity.

The accord also marks a significant decline in Russian influence in the South Caucasus. Both countries further committed to boosting cooperation with the US in energy, technology, and economic sectors.

“President Trump in six months did a miracle,” President Aliyev said.

Prime Minister Pashinyan praised Trump’s efforts, saying, “We are laying a foundation to write a better story than the one we had in the past.”

The leaders of both nations expressed their support for Trump’s nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize.

It is worth noting that Pakistan has previously nominated Trump for the award for his role in brokering a ceasefire with India, while Israel also submitted a nomination last month. Cambodia has likewise nominated the US president for mediating a ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia.
