Austria has opened a pathway for skilled foreign workers, including Pakistanis, to live and work in the country through its Red-White-Red Card programme, subject to specific eligibility requirements.
The scheme allows qualified professionals from different fields to secure employment and obtain legal residence in Austria.
The card is generally issued for 24 months and permits holders to work for the employer specified in their application.
The programme covers several categories, including highly qualified professionals, skilled workers in eligible occupations, graduates of Austrian universities and colleges, and certain individuals planning to establish businesses.
However, applicants must meet the conditions applicable to their respective categories. Work experience or an interest in moving to Austria alone does not guarantee eligibility for the programme.
For Pakistani applicants, the requirements may include relevant educational qualifications or vocational training, professional experience, language proficiency and, where applicable, a job offer from an Austrian employer.
Certain categories also require applicants to meet a points-based assessment, which may consider their age, qualifications, work experience and language skills.
Prospective applicants are advised to arrange their educational certificates, professional credentials and employment records in advance.
Evidence of German or English language proficiency may also be required, depending on the category under which they apply.
Austria's demand for workers in particular sectors does not automatically make every applicant eligible for the scheme. While formal recognition of foreign qualifications is generally not compulsory for many non-regulated occupations, applicants must provide documents that demonstrate their suitability for the intended employment.
Different rules apply to regulated professions, including certain healthcare and nursing roles, where formal recognition of qualifications and additional professional authorisation may be necessary before an individual can practise.
The programme also provides opportunities for eligible cardholders to progress towards a Red-White-Red Card Plus.
Those who fulfil the relevant employment and other conditions may apply for the extended permit, which offers broader access to the Austrian labour market.
Workers from Pakistan employed in fields such as hospitality, cooking, restaurant services, information technology, engineering, driving and technical trades can explore whether they qualify under the relevant categories. Eligibility, however, depends on the occupation, individual qualifications and the specific requirements in force.
Applicants are encouraged to consult Austria's official immigration resources to verify eligible occupations, salary thresholds, qualification requirements, language criteria and application procedures before making any commitments.
Authorities also advise prospective applicants to rely on verified information rather than unconfirmed claims from recruitment agents, as meeting the requirements and securing any necessary employment offer are essential steps in the process.
