Nine people suffered life-threatening injuries in a stabbing attack on a train near Cambridge in eastern England on Saturday evening.

According to the police, two men have been arrested in connection with the incident, which Prime Minister Keir Starmer described as an “appalling incident.”

According to the British Transport Police (BTP), counterterrorism officers are assisting with the investigation as authorities work to determine the motive and full circumstances surrounding the attack.

The national emergency protocol known as “Plato” — used for potential marauding terror attacks — was initially activated but later withdrawn. BTP Chief Superintendent Chris Casey said officers are conducting urgent inquiries and cautioned against speculation about the motive at this stage.

Cambridgeshire Police said armed units were dispatched after receiving reports of an incident at Huntingdon station at around 7:39 p.m. The train was stopped there, and two suspects were taken into custody.

The East of England Ambulance Service said it launched a large-scale emergency response, sending multiple ambulances, tactical commanders, and a hazardous area response team to the scene.

Several injured passengers were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment.
