Lionel Messi is set to make his final appearance for Argentina on Tuesday when the world champions face Benin in a farewell friendly at the Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires.
The 39-year-old has brought the curtain down on an international career spanning more than two decades, having announced his retirement from Argentina duty in August.
The Argentine Football Association later invited him to make one final appearance in front of home fans.
Messi leaves behind a historic international legacy, having led Argentina to the 2022 World Cup, two Copa América titles and the Finalissima. He is already the country's record scorer with 125 goals and, after Tuesday's match, will hold the appearance record at 208 caps.
Around 85,000 fans are expected at the Monumental, with members of Argentina's 2022 World Cup-winning squad also set to join the farewell celebrations. Former international teammates, including Ángel Di María, are expected to be present for the occasion.
Messi's final Argentina appearance will close one of the most remarkable international careers in football history—and formally begin the post-Messi era for the reigning world champions.
