Cristiano Ronaldo has sparked fresh discussion about his place in football history after clips from an old interview resurfaced on social media.
CNN Portugal shared excerpts on Monday, October 12, from the conversation with Spanish journalist and close friend Edu Aguirre. The interview originally aired on Spanish television channel La Sexta on February 3, 2025, shortly before Ronaldo turned 40.
Asked whether he considered himself the greatest footballer of all time, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner replied: “I think so. I haven't seen anyone better than me.”
Ronaldo acknowledged that some fans might prefer Lionel Messi, Pelé or Diego Maradona, but argued that his all-round skills set him apart. He pointed to his ability to score with both feet, his heading, free kicks, speed and physical strength.
The resurfaced interview has also renewed interest in Ronaldo’s pursuit of 1,000 career goals. “If I scored 920 goals, 925, 930 … the best in history is me, full stop," he said. The Portuguese forward, who plays for Saudi club Al Nassr, is reportedly 20 goals away from reaching the milestone.
The 41-year-old’s comments have re-emerged amid reports of tensions over his role in Portugal’s national team. The supplied report says he had a disagreement with coach Jorge Jesus over playing time and that disciplinary proceedings were initiated by the Portuguese Football Federation.
