NCCIA probe into Rizwan delayed as agency seeks his cooperation: report

The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) is yet to complete its inquiry involving Pakistan cricketers Mohammad Rizwan and Imam-ul-Haq, with reports saying that the process has been delayed by Rizwan’s alleged lack of cooperation.

The agency seized the mobile phones of the two cricketers following Pakistan’s Test series against England. The inquiry is examining suspected online betting and gambling-related activity as well as reports of information being leaked from the Pakistan dressing room during the series.

Rizwan and Imam appeared before NCCIA investigators in Lahore earlier this month. However, no finding of wrongdoing has been announced against either player.

Citing agency sources, a TV channel reported that investigators have tried several times to contact Rizwan and asked him to assist with the inquiry. They said there were occasions when they could not reach him, while at other times he said he would first speak to his lawyer.

The NCCIA plans to approach Rizwan again on Monday. The TV report said that the agency could issue a formal notice and take further legal action if he does not cooperate.

Investigators also need Rizwan to be present for the forensic examination of his mobile phone, the sources said. They added that the examination could potentially be carried out through another method, but warned that this could lead to data being lost.

The agency had earlier questioned Rizwan about a number of contacts. The report said some of his answers required further clarification, making a forensic examination of his phone necessary.

A Special Investigation Team has been formed to handle the inquiry involving the two cricketers.

Imam, meanwhile, has cooperated with the investigators after initially showing some reluctance. His mobile phone is currently undergoing forensic examination, according to the report.
