Javelin star Muhammad Yasir Sultan threw a season-best 77.43 metres to secure a bronze medal at the Asian Throwing Championships in Mokpo, South Korea, on Friday.

The 27-year-old achieved the mark on his sixth and final attempt, surpassing his previous season-best of 76.07m, which he had set at the Asian Athletics Championships in May.

Sri Lanka’s Pathirage Rumesh Tharanga won gold with an 82.05m throw and became the only athlete to cross the 80m barrier in the morning session.

Japan’s Gen Naganuma took silver with a throw of 78.60m.

Yasir’s campaign started with a no-throw, followed by a solid 75.79m. He then registered two consecutive throws in the 72m range before another no-throw on his fifth attempt. It was his final effort that produced the medal-winning 77.43m.

The javelin ace had previously claimed silver at last year’s championships with a 78.10m throw and bronze in 2023 with a 79.93m throw, which remains his personal best to date.

Despite his achievements, Yasir has yet to break the 80m barrier.
