LAHORE: Punjab Wildlife and Parks Department has issued guidelines to safeguard animals and birds from the prevailing heatwave.
As per the instructions, officials of the wildlife parks and zoos need to ensure that heat protective steps are strictly implemented at every facility under the purview of the department.
Under the guidelines, clean drinking water is supposed to be available throughout the day in all cages, enclosures, and animal compartments; whereas food and water should be kept in the shaded places.
Shade provision is also directed for animals depending upon their numbers, while water should be sprinkled inside the enclosures whenever required.
Special arrangements are made for heat-sensitive animals like monkeys, bears, lions, and tigers.
Fans, air coolers, and ice should be available in their enclosures, while ponds/water pools need to be ensured to help animals cool down. The department has directed the veterinary staff to keep a watch over the health condition of animals, to clip their fur (if required), while give Vitamin C, glucose, and other supplements on expert advice.
