The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) parliamentary party has decided to seek the National Assembly’s approval for imposing an emergency in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P).
A resolution endorsing the move is scheduled to be presented in the National Assembly on Wednesday.
The decision was made during a parliamentary party meeting in Islamabad.
Speaking to the media, Adviser to the Prime Minister on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah said the government had no option but to improve its performance in K-P. He described the decision to take action in the province as a necessity and expressed confidence that the situation would improve and terrorism would be eliminated.
He stressed that defeating terrorism was essential and said there was no alternative to winning the fight against militant groups.
Sanaullah alleged that the PTI-led K-P government had failed to fully cooperate in counterterrorism efforts and was focusing on activities other than addressing the security threat. In contrast, he said, the Balochistan government was cooperating fully in the fight against terrorism.
Referring to militant groups’ demands, he said terrorists were calling for the separation of Balochistan and questioned the possibility of negotiations with those seeking to break up Pakistan. He also alleged that the PTI’s narrative resembled that of terrorist groups.
Sanaullah maintained that terrorists had no legitimate political demands and were instead targeting Pakistan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
He further said Saudi Arabia, China, Turkiye and Qatar had made efforts to resolve the issue, but the Afghan government had not accepted their proposals.
The adviser also blamed the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and groups referred to as Fitna al-Khawarij for involvement in terrorism. He added that extortion, the use of non-custom-paid vehicles and drug trafficking were criminal activities contributing to the spread of terrorism.
