The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has arrested a Pakistani youth accused of attempting to seek political asylum in Australia through a same-sex marriage arrangement.

According to Deputy Director Immigration Shahzad Akbar, the suspect belongs to Gujranwala.

He was allegedly planning to travel to Australia after entering into a same-sex marriage in an effort to obtain political asylum. However, FIA Immigration officials arrested him while he was attempting to travel to Sri Lanka.

Immigration authorities stated that an examination of the suspect’s mobile phone reportedly revealed material related to political asylum applications in Australia and same-sex relationships.

Officials further disclosed that the suspect had previously attempted to enter Europe illegally via Iran in 2019 through irregular migration routes commonly referred to as the “dunki” route.

He was reportedly detained by police in Greece and later deported to Turkey. Authorities also stated that he had previously been deported from Maldives in 2022.

During the investigation, the suspect allegedly admitted to paying PKR 4 million to an Australian national, Steven Christopher, in connection with arrangements related to political asylum.

Authorities claimed that the Australian citizen visited Pakistan in April 2026 and entered into a same-sex marriage agreement with the suspect.

Officials added that the accused has been handed over to the Anti-Human Trafficking Circle (AHTC) in Karachi for further legal proceedings.
