North Karachi couple case: Police question domestic staff in ongoing investigation

KARACHI: Police have detained several workers for questioning in connection with the killing of an elderly couple whose bodies were discovered inside their home in the Sir Syed area of North Karachi.

According to police sources, a carpenter, a plumber and a painter had been working at the house. The plumber had completed his work, while the carpenter and painter were still engaged in work at the property. Investigators have recorded their statements and are questioning them as part of the probe.

Police have also recorded statements from the couple’s relatives and neighbours and obtained CCTV footage from the surrounding area. However, officials said the footage showing people entering and leaving the house was unclear.

A mobile phone recovered from the residence has been sent for forensic analysis to collect further evidence. Investigators are also seeking information from family members arriving from Canada. The couple’s children are expected to reach Karachi by the following day, police said.

Meanwhile, post-mortem examinations revealed severe head injuries on both victims. Police Surgeon officials identified the deceased as Muhammad Yamin, aged between 65 and 70, and his wife, Nafis Akhtar, aged between 60 and 65. Investigators suspect that a heavy, blunt object was used in the killings.

Samples collected during the post-mortem examinations will undergo chemical analysis to determine whether the victims were administered poison or an intoxicating substance before their deaths.

Police said the investigation was ongoing, with statements from the workers, forensic reports and other evidence expected to help establish the circumstances surrounding the double murder.
