Man arrested for killing sister, brother-in-law after love marriage in Karachi

Karachi police have arrested the main suspect for allegedly killing a newlywed couple for contracting love marriage in the name of so-called honour.

According to police officials, Saudabad police arrested the suspect, identified as Sajid, within 15 hours of the incident. They said the suspect is the real brother of the deceased woman and has confessed to killing his sister and brother-in-law in Malir’s Saudabad area.

The police said that he told investigators that his sister had earlier been engaged to a man, identified by his surname “Gopang”, in exchange for Rs350,000. However, she later married a man of her own choice, after which the former fiancé allegedly began demanding the return of the money, he added.

According to the suspect’s initial statement, Gopang was due to get married after Eid and allegedly pressured him either to return the amount or kill his sister. The suspect claimed that he committed the crime under pressure.

The police said the couple was attacked while travelling in a car from court to Hyderabad. CCTV footage reportedly shows the firing incident, while the driver and another person accompanying the couple can be seen fleeing to save their lives.

Police further stated that the motorcycle rider involved in the attack was allegedly Gopang, who remains at large. Raids are being conducted for his arrest.
