K-P launches province-wide survey to identify hazardous school buildings

PESHAWAR: The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa government has launched a province-wide process to identify unsafe school buildings following public concerns and videos shared on social media highlighting potential safety hazards, Member of the K-P Advisory Council for Education Dr Aamir Abdullah said.

The move comes days after a roof collapse at a private school in Peshawar reportedly killed at least 30 children and a female teacher and injured more than 50 others.

Dr Abdullah said initial reports had begun reaching the authorities, enabling the Education Department to identify potentially dangerous buildings and take timely action.

He praised the Elementary and Secondary Education Department for continuing its work despite the weekly holiday to review public complaints and assess reports of unsafe school structures.

He said identifying buildings that could endanger students, teachers and other staff was essential to preventing further accidents.

The education adviser also appreciated citizens who recorded and shared videos of schools in poor condition with the relevant authorities.

He said public cooperation was helping officials identify potential risks and urged people to continue reporting safety concerns so that necessary inspections and preventive measures could be undertaken.

Dr Abdullah stressed that cooperation between citizens and government departments was crucial to improving safety standards in educational institutions.

The ongoing initiative aims to identify buildings requiring further inspection and determine the measures needed to provide students and staff with a safer learning environment across the province.
