Pakistan’s first astronaut set to travel to space on November 25

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is preparing to send its first astronaut into space on November 25 with China’s assistance, Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal has announced.

Speaking at an event, Iqbal said Beijing was extending full support to Islamabad’s space programme, adding that the astronaut would depart from a Chinese space centre. He also revealed Pakistan’s ambition to achieve a Moon landing by 2035 through continued cooperation with China.

Highlighting the growing importance of space technology, the minister said it could contribute significantly to agriculture, communications and national security. He emphasised that investment in scientific research was essential to creating new opportunities for Pakistan’s younger generation.

Iqbal also announced plans to establish the country’s first space museum at the University of Narowal. Referring to the Quran’s emphasis on reflecting upon the universe, he underscored the importance of scientific exploration, education and research.

As part of preparations for the mission, Pakistani astronauts Khurram Daud and Muhammad Zeeshan Ali travelled to China in April 2026 for advanced training.

Pakistan’s Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) is working towards the country’s first participation in a crewed mission to China’s Tiangong space station.

Officials said a Pakistani astronaut is expected to join a Shenzhou mission by the end of 2026 as a payload specialist.

During the mission, the astronaut is expected to conduct scientific experiments in microgravity, focusing on material science, biotechnology and life sciences. Researchers hope the findings will contribute to addressing challenges such as climate change and food security.
