At least three people, including an elderly man and an eight-year-old girl, died while over 80 others were injured in separate incidents of aerial firing during Independence Day celebrations in Karachi.

According to rescue officials, people resorted to aerial firing in multiple areas, including Lyari, Orangi Town, Nazimabad, Liaquatabad, Sharifabad, Sohrab Goth, Korangi, and Malir.

Those injured in firing incidents were immediately shifted to various hospitals, while police arrested 20 suspects allegedly involved in celebratory gunfire.

In Azizabad, eight-year-old Mirha was standing outside her home when she was struck by a stray bullet and died on the spot, a rescue official said, adding that in Lyari’s Agha Taj, an elderly resident, Jumma Khan, was killed after being hit by stray fire.

In Korangi 3½, a man identified as Stephen also lost his life after being struck by a bullet fired from an unknown direction.

Rescue sources confirmed that the injured included six boys, one girl, and 24 women.

Police warned that life-threatening aerial firing in the name of celebration would not be tolerated, adding that strict legal action was being taken against those arrested.
