The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed a brother’s petition challenging his sisters’ share of inheritance. During the hearing, Justice Naeem Akhtar Afghan remarked that sisters are entitled to their property.

A two-member bench, headed by Justice Hassan Azhar Rizvi, heard the case.

Justice Afghan observed that the brother’s argument seemed aimed at having the sisters perform household duties rather than receive their rightful share of the property.

He noted that sisters are often expected to cook and clean, but this does not affect their legal entitlement.

Justice Rizvi emphasised that a sister’s inheritance share is explicitly mentioned in the Quran, and divine commandments cannot be ignored. The court also noted that the property division deed lacked the signatures of the sisters.

The brother’s lawyer argued that he had already given a share to sister Maryam, but she claimed it was less than her entitled portion. The court, however, dismissed the appeal, upholding the sisters’ right to their full inheritance.
