Two accused in the Baldia factory fire case, Abdul Rehman alias Bhola and Zubair alias Charya, were released from prison following their acquittal by the Supreme Court earlier this month.
According to prison authorities, both men had been incarcerated at the Central Jail and were released after completion of legal formalities.
The superintendent of Central Jail confirmed that the release orders were executed after the Registrar of the Sindh High Court issued formal directives, which were later forwarded to the anti-terrorism court and prison authorities.
The development comes after the Supreme Court of Pakistan, on June 10, set aside the death sentences awarded to the two men by the trial court and upheld by the Sindh High Court in connection with the Baldia Factory Fire.
A three-member bench headed by Justice Justice Shahzad Malik had allowed the appeals of Abdul Rehman alias Bhola and Zubair alias Charya, ordering their acquittal.
Meanwhile, victims of the Baldia factory tragedy and labour rights organisations have demanded that the case be reopened for further investigation.
