SAPM Rana Sanaullah has confirmed that Chief of Army Staff General Asim Munir will continue to serve until November 2027 under the existing legal framework.

Speaking to the media on Wednesday, the minister clarified that after amendments to the law, no fresh notification is required to determine the tenure of service chiefs.

“On the day the Air Chief or any other service chief completes his five-year term, he will automatically retire,” Sanaullah said.

He explained that the law already provides for such extensions, which have been a recurring practice in the country’s history.

“The successes achieved under Asim Munir’s leadership make him the most deserving of this extension. In the past, we have seen multiple instances where individuals even secured extensions for themselves,” he remarked.

Highlighting the Army Chief’s performance, the minister said that continuity of leadership was essential for Pakistan, especially considering the prevailing security situation and regional challenges.

He stressed that the arrangement is fully compliant with the law and strengthens institutional stability.

Sanaullah added that the decision ensures smooth functioning of the armed forces at a critical time.

He underlined that leadership continuity contributes to national defence preparedness and provides confidence in the country’s ability to address internal and external threats.

The clarification comes amid speculation regarding the tenures of service chiefs following recent legal reforms.

By affirming General Asim Munir’s continuation until 2027, the government has sought to eliminate uncertainty and reinforce confidence in the leadership of the Pakistan Army.
