Punjab govt announces launch of Lahore Tram Service in February 2026

LAHORE: The Punjab government on Monday announced that the much-anticipated tram service in Lahore will officially commence operations in February 2026.
Punjab Transport Minister Bilal Akbar confirmed that the tram’s test run has been successfully completed.
The service, covering the route from Thokar to Harbanspura, will offer a seating capacity of 270 passengers.
The project is being developed at a cost of 3 million dollars, with technical collaboration from NESPAK and the PMA, whose officials recently visited China for consultations.
In addition to Lahore’s tram service, the provincial government has also approved metro train projects for Faisalabad and Gujranwala.
According to the minister, the Faisalabad metro will accommodate around 300,000 passengers daily at an estimated cost of 110 million dollars, while the Gujranwala metro will serve 140,000 passengers daily with an investment of 50 million dollars.

Highlighting the environmental benefits, Bilal Akbar noted that increasing pollution from motorcycles and cars in Lahore has raised serious concerns.
The tram and metro projects are designed to provide eco-friendly urban transport solutions and significantly reduce pollution levels across Punjab’s major cities.
