Prof Dr Wasim Qazi appointed Karachi University vice chancellor

Prof Dr Wasim Qazi has been appointed as the vice chancellor of the University of Karachi for a four-year term after approval of Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah.

Sindh Universities and Boards Secretary Abbas Baloch issued a notification after the chief minister approved Qazi’s appointment.

Qazi has been serving as vice chancellor of Karachi Metropolitan University for the past two years. He previously served as vice chancellor of Iqra University.

The appointment followed a meeting between Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah and three shortlisted candidates — Dr Wasim Qazi, Dr Moazzam Khan and Dr Shafiqur Rehman — on Friday morning.

The search committee, headed by Sindh Higher Education Commission Chairman Dr Tariq Rafi, awarded Qazi 86 marks, compared with 74 for Dr Moazzam Khan and 71 for Dr Shafiqur Rehman.

The post had fallen vacant after the completion of former Karachi University vice chancellor Dr Khalid Iraqi’s four-year term on July 28, 2026. NED University Vice Chancellor Dr Tufail Ahmad was subsequently given additional charge of the post.

Dr Tufail Ahmad is currently abroad on a 20-day visit.
