Power shutdown at Gharo Pumping Station triggers water shortage in Karachi: KWSC

KARACHI: The Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) said on Saturday that a scheduled technical shutdown by K-Electric (KE) at the Gharo grid transmission facility has disrupted power supply to the Gharo Pumping Station.

According to a KWSC spokesperson, the shutdown began at 10:30am and was expected to continue until 7pm. Technical work at the transmission facility has left the pumping station without electricity.

The spokesperson said the Gharo Pumping Station would remain non-operational for around 11 hours due to the shutdown, resulting in a reduction of approximately 30 million gallons in Karachi’s water supply.

KWSC currently supplies around 650 million gallons of water to the city daily. However, despite the temporary disruption, the corporation said it would provide approximately 620 million gallons on Saturday.

The spokesperson said the temporary suspension of electricity would partially affect water supplies to Bin Qasim, Shah Faisal, PNS Mehran, PAF Base Faisal and Karsaz.

Water supply is expected to return to normal once electricity is restored to the Gharo Pumping Station, the spokesperson added.
