The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has issued new directives to all satellite TV channels, instructing news and current affairs broadcasters to avoid live coverage of distressing incidents.

The ban on live broadcasts of incidents involving explosions, gunfire and terrorist attacks remains in place, the regulator said.

PEMRA directed all satellite TV channels to comply with its stay order issued on February 20, 2023, and broadcast only information verified by the relevant departments or law enforcement agencies.

The authority also instructed all channels to effectively implement time-delay mechanisms during broadcasts and establish independent editorial boards.

PEMRA warned that violations would invite legal action under Sections 29-A, 30 and 33 of the PEMRA Ordinance.
